trouble with menus

Post By:user_58348 | Reply

I've started to put a site together at http://79.170.40.177/debbiewaller.com/ using joomla 3
I've started a couple of articles and added them to a menu. They appear on the menu but when I click on the link I get a page not found error message. The menu concerned is the admin one on the left but the same is happening on the top horizontal menu. Home page links on the menus work fine, it's just the ones to articles that don't.

Thank you. Your answer was really helpful.

Thank you. You are right, that is what's causing the problem. I've never built a joomla site at a temporary URL before so haven't come across this issue. I'll just switch them off until the site is built.

Turn of SEF until you get a proper domain name. There are issues with SEF urls on a temporary domain.

I may have some further information. In order to remove index.php from the URLs I have taken the following steps:
- clicked yes to URL re-writing in global configuration
- changed the htaccess.txt file to .htaccess
If I manually enter index.php into the URL from the menu the page comes up, so this is presumably at the bottom of the issue.
I've now re-read the htaccess file and it says this:
It is required for use of mod_rewrite, but may already # be set by your server administrator in a way that dissallows changing it in # your .htaccess file. If using it causes your server to error out, comment it out (add # to # beginning of line), reload your site in your browser and test your sef url's.

Can anyone explain the commenting out part in less technical language please?

I have only just started this site and I'm aware there are other issues, but this is the one I need some help with please.
The links are the ones in the menu on the left hand side, the menu is called admin, the menu items are called 'confidentiality and social media' and 'business services'. Both these menu items should go to individual articles but they don't.

Could you specify which articles do you mean? Anyway, your site still has a lot of bugs. There are texts overlapping each other.
